Nonprofit Data Playground

Civic Software Foundation, a Portland-based 501(c)3 nonprofit. Hack Oregon is a beloved local program of the Civic Software Foundation, founded in 2013. Hack Oregon is a rapid-development prototyping lab that collaborates with government, industry partners, and teams of expert volunteers to build technology projects in the public interest.

CIVIC Collaboration Model

We facilitate annual build cycles with teams of multidisciplinary experts who volunteer their time for 6-months to build open source data projects on various themes in the public interest. We've developed the CIVIC platform, which is a development environment and design system to enable high quality, repeatable production of public data systems and sharable web-based visualizations. This year, the CIVIC platform will be available for a network of national contributors to scale development on CIVIC for other cities across the country.

Demo Day

The season culminates in a Demo Day and live product launch to showcase our work. This year's Demo Day is August 29th at Revolution Hall, where we'll release several exciting new applications on the platform.

Open and Accountable Elections Project

One project this year is on the theme of Open and Accountable Elections, in partnership with the City of Portland.

We are seeking a paid contract position to provide capacity for the front-end delivery of this application, and provide architecture leadership to the platform as a whole. The working environment on the front end includes a team of 15+ in-person volunteer collaborators that meet in person and contribute 10 hours a week to the project cycle, in addition to a team of remote open-source contributors. The entire project scope includes 125 in-person volunteers across various aspects of the platform, including design, data visualization, cloud infrastructure, data science, and backend APIs development.

Front End Frameworks on the CIVIC Platform

We’re building inclusive web interfaces for CIVIC projects through world-class accessibility, performance, and design, with our open-source library of common data visualization, mapping and UI components. We’re evolving our tooling and patterns to balance rapid development, iterative improvement, scalability, and maintainability. Our applications are built using React and Redux, powered by APIs.

Your Role:

You will provide architectural leadership for the front-end of the CIVIC Platform, with a focus on the Open and Accountable Elections application. This role will be a mix of setting front-end architecture patterns in collaboration with our volunteer teams that can enable developers of different experience levels to work productively, and writing code using these patterns.

This is a 3-month contract position, starting immediately, and ends Sept 1.

Compensation

$6,000-$7,500K Monthly

Your Experience:

• Years of working with development teams on the front-end of large-scale production applications

• Professional experience in React and Redux

• Experience setting patterns and designing application architecture for others to implement

• Experience in training and mentoring junior developers to build on large-scale production applications
