Our IT team faces all challenges head on to move us into the digital future of transit. In this important role, you will work on digital projects today that will shape our region's transportation future tomorrow.
As our Senior Systems Engineer, you will not only maintain TriMet's technological systems, but also find creative and innovative ways to improve them. You will be an integral member of the System's team by continuing our Hop Fastpass implementation (E-fare), executing new feature development and rollout, and troubleshooting issues and incidents from the field as they appear in real-time. You will test numerous vendor systems, analyze the data, and make recommendations to leaders from across TriMet about your findings. You are right for this role if you are comfortable with ambiguity, and recognize when change arrives quickly and frequently, systems are improved.

Essential Functions
- Design, implement, document, maintain and support the operating systems including software customization and network configuration. Document system and network configuration. Manage system security and performance. Understand backend software, network and database interfaces to SCADA controlled RTUs and PLCs. May include systems including CAD/AVL, Computer Aided Dispatch/Automatic Vehicle Location, Rail Control Systems, including SCADA and RTU/PCL, CCTV (Closed Circuit TV), vehicle born, in building and on light rail platforms, Land Mobile Radio, P25 700 MhZ, trunked, digital, with tunnel BDAs.
- Participate with Information Technology staff in the design, implementation, and maintenance of ancillary systems.
- Collaborate with business units in defining software, hardware, database and network needs. Provide Solaris and Windows end-user support and training. Assist users in the definition and resolution of system-related problems.
- Work closely with Information Technology technical staff in the definition and procurement of hardware and software resources needed to support central operating systems.
- Implement new systems software and modify existing software in an optimal manner with no adverse effect on current production operations and with minimal impact on development and testing activities.
- Develop procedures for the integration of systems data with the agency enterprise information model.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of systems software supplied by the manufacturer including Solaris, Oracle, Windows, and Cisco. Maintain working knowledge of Free/Open Source Software including Linux, Apache, Samba.
- Provide after hours "on-call" support to ensure the operational integrity of TriMet systems. Answer questions and assist in issue resolution. Provide on-site response to critical system issues.
- Fulfill administrative reporting requirements through project plans and project status reports.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering or related technical field.
- Minimum of seven years information technology experience, four of which must have been in a systems analyst or equivalent position.
- Minimum of two years experience in UNIX and network administration. Or any equivalent combination of training or experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of project management tools and techniques.
- Knowledge of business and operational systems including rail transportation systems, fire/life safety systems, signals, traction power, and fare collection.
- Knowledge of specific systems, field devices and protocols. Experience with Milestone software.
- Knowledge of standard operating environments: Solaris, Red Hat, Ubuntu, Linux, Windows XP, Windows 7, 2003 and 2008 Server, VM Ware.
- Knowledge of network and database technologies and protocols. May include: TCP/IP, ODBC, SQL*NET, SCADA, SMB/NMB, LDAP, SSL, VPN, Modbus/TCP, Genisys and SNMP.
- Knowledge of Geographic Information System tools.
- Knowledge of Sun and Intel based microcomputer and server hardware, Cisco networking hardware and Agency standard software products.
- Knowledge in all phases of the automated systems development life cycle, with emphasis on architecture to support technical application development staff.
- Knowledge in Relational Database technology theory, design, development, and access using SQL with an industry standard RDBMS.
- Knowledge in software design including but not limited to object oriented design and development theory.
- Knowledge of Free/Open Source Software.
Type of Position / Grade / FLSA: Grade 18, Exempt, Non-Union, Full-Time Salary Range: Minimum: $84,582.00 Maximum: $102,708.00
