Engineering Manager

Development – Portland, Oregon

The mission for this role is to deliver lasting value to our clients by empowering engineers to be helpful, respectful, and client-centered. You are a master at conducting effective 1:1s. You listen to the needs of individuals, provide transparency and context into business decisions, and drive departmental strategies identified in quarterly departmental offsites. You are an advisor and problem-solver to those around you.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership

  • Manage, coach and develop a group of talented software engineers

  • Oversee personnel management for your employees: employee performance, setting expectations and goals, recruiting, hiring, training, etc

  • Quarterly review of job descriptions, engineering career matrix, career pathing options, position scorecards, departmental handbook, and other team documentation

  • Help build positive relationships between all Toads

  • Be a role model for the company culture

  • Maintain a positive and respectful tone in all interactions

Engineering 

  • Manage software development projects, including tracking project metrics and ensuring continuous improvement of code quality

  • On-time delivery of high quality software projects

  • Guide team in following best practices for software development and testing, including code reviews

  • Oversee quality of project deliverables to ensure they meet project standards and needs

  • Collaborate with software architects for estimations and planning sprint deliverables

  • Coordinate with project managers and product owners to identify risks and clear roadblocks

  • Ensure quality documentation

Thought Leadership

  • Authors at least 6 articles about technology and/or leadership annually

  • Model continuous career growth

  • Foster relationship between the development teams and the greater Metal Toad community

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Believe in the company mission

  • 6+ years experience implementing software applications and/or leading software development teams.  Desired expertise includes web apps (React, Angular), MVC frameworks (Django, .NET, Symfony), and Cloud technologies (AWS, Azure).

  • Actively participate in team project work up to 50% of the time, as needed for success. 
  • Proven ability to build relationships with a diverse set of clients: including senior level executives, R&D, product management, legal, finance, sales and marketing experts within large Fortune 500 organizations

  • Excellent organizational, project management, consultative and communication skills

  • Ability to quickly grasp and distinctly explain technological and business concepts

  • Leadership philosophy supports autonomy, decentralized decision making

  • Proven leadership ability
