Your Opportunity

New Relic is looking for a lead Java engineer to join our Usage Pipeline (UP) team in downtown Portland. As a lead on this customer-focused platform team, you'll be helping to design the architecture, write the code, and, of course, monitor it all with New Relic.

This position is perfect for someone who loves to work with large amounts of data and is comfortable with concurrency patterns and streaming technologies. It is particularly well suited for an experienced engineer who wants to share their knowledge, wouldn’t mind broadening their skill set to a wide range of technologies, and has an approach to operations that keeps their services stable.

Opportunity to work from a remote office may be available depending on applicant location.

What You’ll Do

  • We have a wide variety of backgrounds and experience levels who collaborate to tackle hard problems. We take collaboration, leadership, career growth, inclusiveness, and team trust seriously.
  • We flex our working style between solo, pair, and group programming, as appropriate to the task at hand.
  • We use agile practices to ship software incrementally with frequent customer feedback. We take turns driving our deliverables to ensure we meet our commitments and share the leadership and administration responsibilities.
  • We work closely with architecture, product management, technical support, and our design team to make sure we’re building the right features to help our customers understand and manage their digital business and product usage.
  • Everyone participates in a weekly on-call rotation, but the team is big enough that there are more off-weeks than on. When issues arise, we prioritize getting them fixed right away to protect our personal time. We're also flexible about swapping weeks because we know life is what happens outside of work.

Your Qualifications

  • You are highly collaborative.
  • You have 5+ years of experience designing, building, and maintaining efficient, reusable, and reliable Java code.
  • You have a deep understanding of concurrency patterns.
  • You have production experience owning pieces of streaming architecture. Experience using Kafka and/or Apache Flink is an added bonus and will help you hit the ground running.
  • You are comfortable working with SQL and can understand and create complex queries.
  • You have a DevOps approach and not only like to build services, you are also invested in their operation by monitoring their performance, thinking about capacity planning, and quickly addressing incidents when they arise. In fact, an SRE background or skill set would be a bonus, as well.
  • You enjoy mentoring others and helping teammates level up in their careers. You have a high level of emotional intelligence.
  • You feel passionate about improving software through constant iteration.
  • You care deeply about maintaining well-tested code with minimum manual testing toil.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience using New Relic tools and NRQL.
  • Javascript or React experience.

Please note that visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
