Ride Report's engineering team currently consists of 9 full-stack engineers and an engineering manager. Our stack is built primarily in Python, React using Typescript, GraphQL, and we have an AWS-hosted infrastructure managed using Terraform and Kubernetes. We're a values-driven team, emphasizing pragmatism and collaboration. We put intentionality into our processes and communication—you'll spend a lot of time in Slack, Notion, and GitHub planning, documenting, and sharing information.

In the role of Engineering Manager, you will build an effective engineering team by supporting needs of both individuals and the collective, and helping the team grow gracefully.

You will:

  • Manage engineers

    • Conduct regular 1:1s with a team of 3 to 8 software engineers
    • Set expectations, provide regular feedback & hold team members accountable
    • Develop a strong two-way feedback loop where you share wider organizational context and build a deep understanding of your direct reports and how they work
    • Support employees on an individual level and help resolve challenges that arise
    • Craft a fulfilling and engaging work experience through regular career growth and development conversations
    • Share regular feedback and conduct performance reviews with your direct reports and colleagues
    • Develop and implement professional development and personal growth programs for employees
  • Iterate and improve our engineering processes and technical culture

    • Develop and maintain a strong and up-to-date understanding of the challenges and opportunities the team is facing building and deploying software
    • Provide support and guidance that enables the team to self-organize and to achieve sustained high velocity and predictability.
    • Participate in engineering technology discussions for product development alongside other engineers, and advocate better development practices (CI, testing, operational efficiency, etc.)
    • Facilitate collaboration with engineers, product owners, and designers to solve challenging problems across our products
  • Grow the engineering team

    • Act as hiring manager for engineers, managing the hiring process from sourcing to signed offer
    • Schedule interviews, answer candidates' questions, and act as a liaison between future employees and the interview team
    • Manage onboarding new employees, and further evolve our onboarding processes
  • Drive company initiatives that support fostering an inclusive and thriving team environment for a diverse community

    • Contribute to our structure for promotional tracks within disciplines
    • Help define and track metrics around diversity goals
    • Generate and support efforts to promote inclusion and equity in the organization
    • Plan and coordinate team-building activities
    • Improve the employee guide and handbook

Within one month, you will:

  • Have met with all folks on your team and the leads of other teams in 1:1s.
  • Have a general understanding of the state of the high level goals of the company, how ongoing projects relate to those goals, and what projects are coming up next.
  • Disseminate relevant updates and summaries from product and management meetings to your team.
  • Know where to search for and find answers to questions about company processes and policies.

Within 3 months, you will:

  • Represent your team in product planning and tactical management meetings.
  • Begin to understand and identify blockers for your team doing their best work.
  • Have discussed and learned the career goals of your direct reports.
  • Learn our hiring process and practices.
  • Know the necessary HR functions for supporting your team.
  • Contribute to our OKR planning and review process for the following quarter.

Within 6 months, you will:

  • Have an OKR(s) for your team and own the result and outcomes of that OKR.
  • Address blockers for your team and other teams preemptively.
  • Solicit feedback and facilitate making changes to product and/or engineering processes to ensure your team and other teams are effective and efficient.
  • Have enabled your team to individually and collectively track toward and hit their goals.

Helpful Skills and Experience

  • Managed a team of engineers, especially in a small team or startup environment.
  • Involvement in initiatives to improve engineering teams' processes and performance.
  • Worked with cross-functional stakeholders balancing their team's needs against business needs on a regular basis.
  • Involvement in interview processes for hiring engineers.
  • Experience as a software developer or product manager on a complex software product

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary for the Engineering Manager role at Ride Report is $138,200. Ride Report provides the same base salary for every employee in this role. Learn why we don't negotiate our salaries.
