Web Services Engineer

Panic has a very special opportunity for a nice, creative, talented Web Services Engineer to join our amazing, award-winning development team.

We’re looking for someone to help us build and manage our growing web development needs. Panic has a number of critical self-hosted web services, and even more on the horizon, so we need your help. We're a small company with only about 25 employees, so duties are often shared among several team members, and most of our current web and infrastructure roles are managed by 2 or 3 people. We’d like to build off that – we need someone to work on our web apps, improve our existing tooling, and help support launches of future products and services.

We’d love to talk to candidates with experience that have:

• Python 3.x-based development, specifically with Django or Flask
• HTML, CSS and Javascript
• Git-based development workflow (GitLab experience a plus)
• PostgreSQL and Redis
• General command-line and Linux server familiarity

It would also be wonderful, but not necessary, to have experience in any of the following:

• Ansible and Vagrant
• Apache, nginx, and haproxy
• New Relic
• VMWare ESXi and vCenter Server
• General Linux (Ubuntu) server management (ufw, postfix, ldap, etc)
• General networking/router management experience
• Building clean, understandable REST APIs for internal use
• PHP

We don’t require a college degree — previous work experience is preferred. Being a small company, intra-personal skills are extremely important: candidates must be self-directed, able to work independently, communicate clearly with their peers, be able to explain and build consensus on large or important decisions, and generally be nice to work with. We don’t currently support remote work, and would prefer to hire someone already in the Portland area, but we still encourage anyone to apply and would relocate someone within the USA if we can’t find a suitable local candidate.

FAQ

Is this a front-end or back-end position?

It's kind of both! Because we're a small company, employees tend to fulfill multiple roles and work across traditional boundries like "front-end" and "back-end" development. That said, most of the work we see this candidate doing will be on the back-end side. If you're traditionally a front-end person, don't let this stop you from applying if you think you've got the experience or know-how!

I don't see node, npm, or express listed. Did you miss something?

Nope! We think the fast-evolving world of Javascript is super interesting, but we've built most our stack on traditional and well-supported technologies. As we've always said – If it's good enough for Instagram, it's good enough for us. Don't let this turn you away though: we'd love to have ES2015 (or even ES2016/ES2017/ES2018) experienced folks on the team.

As an apps company, what web services do you have?

A lot, actually! As we listed in our 2017 report, we run our own fully custom web store, Panic Sync, firewatch.camera, and have a few (big) new things in the works as well…
