Panic wants to hire a firmware/embedded systems engineer to work on our handheld video game console, Playdate.

This would be a full-time or part-time role, based in Portland, Oregon, working in conjunction with our existing hardware engineer.

Panic is a Portland, Oregon-based company, founded in 1997, and traditionally known for its excellent Mac applications targeted to web developers. We’re small — 26 people — but we’re expanding our reach. We’ve broadened into video game publishing — “Firewatch” in 2016, and “Untitled Goose Game” in 2019 — and are now developing a new handheld video game console called Playdate, due in 2020.

The Playdate team is small: a half-dozen people with not a lot of industry experience, but with a big desire to produce something special in the video game console world. Everyone here wears many hats, and has a passion for high-quality, design-oriented products.

As an Embedded Systems Engineer at Panic you will:

  • Add exciting new features and fix bugs in Playdate firmware.
  • Improve and formalize our firmware development and release process.
  • Work with the Playdate team to strategize product direction, making Playdate the best it can be.

We’d love to talk to experienced candidates that have:

  • Extensive experience writing and debugging C code for embedded platforms.
  • Familiarity with FreeRTOS and Cortex-M7 (in particular its tricky cache issues.)
  • Experience managing firmware updates for shipped hardware, especially in the consumer electronics space.

Additionally, it would be wonderful, but not required, if you have:

  • Experience with ESP32, USB, or Bluetooth.
  • Experience working with small teams, in small companies.
  • Ability to work in our Portland, Oregon office.

Panic prides itself on its low-stress work environment, and a commitment to its employees’ quality of life.

This listing expired on Aug 26. Applications are no longer accepted.
